Thursday was spend "housecleaning" very boring but necessary. More loads of laundry, cleaning the floors and furniture.
Friday, Terry's meeting was cancelled so we decide to take advantage of him being available and off we go to the Lower East Side to visit the Tenement Museum. The immigrants had a very difficult time when they first arrived here. The apartment we visited on the tour would have had an Irish family of 5 living in it and perhaps more than one family. I did not learn too much as I know about tenement buildings from Glasgow. However, in Glasgow the flats of the tenements would only house one family. These flats would have housed many families. On one of the tours we heard that people who worked the day shift would rent out their rooms to people who worked the night shift. It is interesting to note that the flat we visited is, in fact, bigger than Hannah's apartment. The difference is that Hannah shares her apartment with Simone - not three other families!!!!
Tonight is "Fashion's Night Out" This is the second year for this. Apparently this was the brain child of Anna Wintour - the editor of Vogue (Meryl Streep played her in the movie "The Devil Wears Prada") It is a night where the designers and department stores basically throw a party and encourage people to come out and visit the stores. Terry and I walk up and down Madison Avenue. We are a most unlikely pair to be there. All the beautiful people are there wearing their designer clothes and there we are wearing our usual scruffy but comfy clothes - including runners - the only shoes I wear here. We check out DKNY - we hear that Donna Karen herself will be here as she is celebrating her 25th year. We later hear she singed her hair on one of the cake candles. We don't stay long enough to see her. We go to Michael Kors - Idina Mendel is supposed to be singing here tonight. She is the singer who played the original "green witch" in "Wicked" on Broadway. She, more recently, had a part in "Glee". We don't see her either. Brian Adams has a photography exhibit and apparently is performing at the Calvin Klein store. The Dolce and Gabana store is very busy with models dancing in the windows. It is a very busy avenue and fun to see, but we return home empty handed. Actually, that is not quite true - someone hands me a balloon - I think she feels sorry for us.
It has been another full day here in the big apple.
Tomorrow will be a sombre day here as it is, what has become known as, "9-11" ........
